CHANGE IN RYE BROOK SANITATION COMPANY

Starting Monday, June 1st Rye Brook will have a new sanitation company that will be responsible for the pickup of garbage, recyclables, bulk trash and green waste. The new company, AAA Carting and Rubbish Removal, Inc. (“Triple A”), will now provide the same sanitation services that have been performed so well for six years by C.R.P. Sanitation, Inc.

Although many residents familiar with the upcoming change have expressed to the Board of Trustees their displeasure with the change in sanitation vendor, the Village of Rye Brook had little choice. Under New York municipal law Rye Brook is required to go out to bid for services in excess of $20,000. The current sanitation contract with C.R.P. expires on May 31, 2009, and, as required by law, Rye Brook publicly sought bids for sanitation services for the next three years. Under New York law the Village is also required to accept the bid of the “lowest responsible bidder.” The company that came in with the lowest bid and otherwise met the requirements of the bid specifications was Triple A. The good news is that for the first year of the new three year contract, Rye Brook will be paying almost $100,000 less than the current annual rate.

Rye Brook will continue to provide “rear yard” garbage pickup twice a week. During the Village’s budget process the Board of Trustees debated whether to keep rear yard pickup or change to the less expensive curbside pickup alternative. At that time it became evident to the Board that many Rye Brook residents were not aware that they do not have to haul their garbage containers to the curb. Residents can simply leave them by their garage. Rye Brook residents should take advantage of this, since we are paying additional money for rear yard service. Please note that the blue recycling bins, bulk trash and green waste material must still be placed by the curb, but not the cans for the twice weekly garbage collection.

If any resident has difficulty bringing the recycling bins to the curb, please let our Village staff know or contact me. I have spoken with the community service coordinator at Blind Brook High School and I will also be reaching out to the coordinator of the Port Chester schools. It would be wonderful to match our youth with residents who are physically unable to bring the bins to the curb.

The Village of Rye Brooks staff has been in communication with Triple A in order to provide as seamless a transition as possible.  During this transition period the Village does anticipate there will be a learning curve for Triple A that may result in some missed pickups.  Residents should also be aware that garbage pickups may not be at the same time as presently experienced. If garbage has not been picked up on the scheduled day, please notify Village staff by calling 939-0668. I urge all of our residents to be patient as Triple A learns the routes and becomes familiar with our community.
