The Village is pleased to report that the Village Board approved a local law granting additional Village property tax benefits to Cold War Veterans. This benefit will provide tax benefits to qualifying Cold War Veterans who were honorably service in the armed forces between the dates of September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991. The benefit is available to eligible Cold War Veterans, the spouse of a Cold War Veteran, or surviving spouse (who has not remarried) of a deceased Cold War Veteran. The benefit may not be available to those Veterans currently receiving certain other exemptions. According to the Town Assessor, the 2008 application deadline for this benefit is June 1, 2008, although he recommends and encourages applicants to apply by May 1.
New York State recently passed legislation creating an exemption for Cold War Veterans to receive a property tax exemption. Each taxing jurisdiction must separately pass legislation extending this benefit to eligible property owners. The option to extend this benefit is up to each separate jurisdiction, and some municipalities may choose not to adopt this exemption. In addition to the Village of Rye Brook, Westchester County has already passed the necessary legislation to apply to Westchester County taxes, and the Town of Rye will be considering this benefit for Town taxes.
For additional information and eligibility requirements, residents are urged to visit the NYS Office of Real Property Services web site at http://www.orps.state.ny.us or contact the Town of Rye Assessor’s office at (914) 939-3566.
