Beginning March 31, 2008, Con Edison will be implementing its Tree Maintenance Program in Rye Brook. This is a county-wide program that has been controversial due to the extensive cutting of trees creating a different visual appearance. Under this Program, it is required that tree limbs be cut ten (10) feet below or on the sides of any electric lines, and fifteen (15) feet above any lines. In addition, Con Edison is planning on removing nineteen (19) trees near the street.
Fallen tree limbs and tree interference are the leading cause of downed power lines and power outages. This work is necessary to improve safety by reducing avoidable outages, and Con Edison advises that the work will be done by professional tree trimmers who follow the International Society of Arboriculture pruning guidelines. Con Edison is mailing information to affected residents about the Tree Maintenance Program, and has placed door hangers in advance of the work. Click here to see a sample of the program brochure.
