ConEd Update
Release Date: October 31, 2011

Morning Update
52 Percent of Customers Restored
NEW YORK – Con Edison crews continue restoring service to customers affected by the snowstorm that hit the region this weekend.
The company has restored power to approximately 61,000 – or 52 percent – of the approximately 118,000 customers who experienced service interruptions since the storm began Saturday afternoon.
Approximately 57,000 customers are without electric service in New York City and Westchester County, about 56,000 of them in Westchester. The hardest-hit communities in Westchester include Yonkers, Cortlandt, Greenburgh, New Castle, North Castle, Mount Pleasant and Yorktown.
Con Edison estimates that the number of field personnel in Westchester County will grow to more than 1,000 today as contractor and mutual aid crews from other utilities arrive.
Con Edison expects to have the vast majority of the New York City customers who were affected restored by late today. The vast majority of the Westchester County customers will be restored by late Wednesday.
Crews give priority to restoring service lines that will provide power to the most customers as quickly as possible, then move on to restore smaller groups and individual customers who are without power.
Con Edison offers the following safety tips:
    1. Trick-or-treaters and their families need to take extra caution and be alert for downed power lines. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by snow, tree limbs, leaves or water.
    1. If you see downed electrical wires, do not go near them. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Never attempt to move them or touch them with any object.
    1. Report all downed wires to Con Edison and your local police department immediately. If a power line falls on your car while you are in it, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.
    1. If your power goes out, disconnect or turn off appliances that would otherwise turn on automatically when service is restored. If several appliances start up at once, the electric circuits may overload.
Customers can use their mobile devices, as well as computers, to report downed power lines, outages and check service restoration status online at They also may call Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting an outage, have your Con Edison account number available, if possible, and report whether your neighbors have also lost power.
The company is in close contact with the New York City Office of Emergency Management and the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services.
