'Move Over' law begins
Release Date: January 03, 2011

If you see an emergency vehicle flashing lights on any of New York's roads and highways, slow down and move over if there are multiple lanes.

That's the law from Saturday when the Ambrose-Searles "Move Over" Act came into force.

Named in honor of New York State Trooper Robert W. Ambrose and Onondaga County Sheriff Deputy Glenn M. Searles, who were killed in the line of duty while their patrol vehicles were stopped on the side of the road, this new law is designed to protect law enforcement, fire personnel and emergency workers, State Police Acting Superintendent John P. Melville said. .

"The highway is one of the most dangerous environments faced by law enforcement," he said.

Motorists are required to use "due care" when they see an emergency vehicle flashing lights and they must reduce speed. On roads with multiple lanes, motorists must move from the lane next to the emergency vehicle unless traffic or other hazards will cause danger.

Violation of the Move Over Act is punishable by a fine of up to $275 plus mandatory court surcharges and two points on the driver's license record.
