FROM WHERE I STAND: Twelve Contemporary Abstract Artists
Release Date: November 09, 2012

FROM WHERE I STAND: Twelve Contemporary Abstract Artists
November 18, 2012 – January 5, 2013
Opening Reception: Sunday, November 18th from 3:00 -5:00pm
[Rye, NY]  The exhibition “From Where I stand” will present the work of twelve contemporary artists whose abstract work explores their vision of the world.  Using a variety of media – oil paint, mono-print, digital print, encaustic – each artist has created their own language of color, form and line to create compositions that may, to a greater or lesser extent, be based on abstracted visual references to the real world. Participating artists include: Kiki Dufault, Roxanne Faber-Savage, Lis Fields, David Fox, Julian Hatton, William Holton, Henry Mandell, Jackie Meier, Lisa Pressman, Tess Recordon, Patricia Spergel, and Katharine Dufault.
The exhibition is curated by Katharine Dufault, an artist who exhibits regularly both in America and abroad and who has served on the Rye Arts Center Gallery committee for the past few years. “I wanted to bring a really great group of abstract artists to The Rye Arts Center.  I felt this style of work had been quite underrepresented and that there would be a big interest in the work, I felt this contemporary exhibition would excite the community.  It would show the range and accessibility of abstract art in variety of media to a new audience who may not be familiar with abstract art beyond its name.  Moreover, it would excite those patrons and collectors who already know and appreciate contemporary art.”
Featured artists are from the Westchester area, New York City, Brooklyn, Connecticut, the Berkshires and the United Kingdom.  All the artists have impressive professional resumes.  The exhibit will prove to be stunning with its variety of work – bright color in paint, digital print, and encaustic; bold monochrome in paint and print.  Moreover, the different sizes and textures from the variety of mediums used will engage and intrigue the viewer. Exhibiting artist, Patricia Spergel explains, “I always come back to abstraction; painting non-objectively continues to challenge and excite me.  It allows me to draw from my personal experiences, while keeping my focus on the formal qualities of paint. Abstract forms hover on the verge of becoming recognizable, tangible objects.  Private, secret events are glimpsed just before they move or change…”
The exhibit is underwritten by the Allan M. Block Agency of Tarrytown. Ed Schultz, President, and avid art collector explains: “The agency and its principals are firmly committed to supporting the arts. It’s so important for people to be well-rounded, and for children especially, to have the opportunity to appreciate art and by extension, life itself.”
The Rye Arts Center is a community-based, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to inspire interest and maximum participation in the arts in Westchester and the surrounding region. We are committed to offering programs that are characterized by artistic tradition, educational value, and a spirit of innovation.
