RARE GEODES FROM PRIVATE COLLECTION TO DEBUT AT RYE ARTS CENTER EXHIBIT
Nature and art come together beautifully at The Rye Arts Center this April in an exquisite exhibit entitled Nature’s Art: Geodes from the private collection of Robert R. Wiener. Curated by Gail Harrison Roman, Ph.D., the exhibition fuses both natural and man-made pieces in an explosive celebration of nature’s finest aesthetic productions.
Geodes are colorful crystalline structures that form inside a hollow spheroidal rock. Made possible by the generosity of Mr. Wiener, this exhibition is inspired by the natural beauty, prismatic color, and environmental context of these extraordinary pieces. The Gallery will also present paintings and sculptures by local and international artists who use elemental materials and the earth itself as creative inspiration, including Katherine Dufault, Chen-Long Lin, Leigh Wen, and William Holton.
Visitors to the Gallery will have the opportunity to view many works not available to the public as they learn about how nature and art interact. Artists have engaged with nature from the Stone Age to the present. Until the Industrial Revolution, artists made their own pigments from soil and geodes, as can be found in paintings by da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Vermeer, among countless others. Even with the contemporary use of chemically-based pigments, many artists continue to explore the value of natural pigments. Nature also inspires artists in their selection of subject matter, as they reproduce and imagine landscapes and seascapes based on their observation of the real world.
Natures Art: Geodes showcases just a small portion of a collection that is over 40 years in the making by Mr. Wiener. In explaining why he is premiering his collection this spring, Wiener states, “I collect because of the beauty of the objects and the joy they give me when I look at them. I hope others will appreciate them as well. I feel a sense of thanks for the opportunity to make this exhibit possible for The Rye Arts Center.”
