LEAF COLLECTION UPDATE

December 8, 2008

Dear Rye Brook Residents;

The collection of leaves is almost complete.  The Department will continue to collect leaves until the end of December, weather pending. With the reduced volume, all streets are now scouted for any remaining leaves.  As collection demand lessens, the Village re-focuses the work of the Highway Department to other tasks, including readying all equipment for the winter ahead.

Over 10,000 yards of leaves are now collected at our compost site.  (See chart of annual collection here)

The last few weeks of November were extremely productive with regards to the volume of leaves brought to the curb from the resident’s yards, and the Highway Department met the task with all available manpower and equipment focused on collecting and hauling these leaves to our compost site.  The Parks Department also provided valuable manpower and equipment, enabling the Village to place a full assault on the leaves.  Crews worked both the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving to collect leaves, and in the week before Thanksgiving a great effort was made to remove as many piles as possible to open the streets for holiday traffic and visiting.  In fact 2,375 cubic yards of leaves were collected in the week of November 17 to 22.  This was the highest one-week total from our past five years of such record keeping.  (See weekly graph here).

The Village asks for your continued cooperation to properly place leaves curbside, and to be mindful of the size and placement of the piles to avoid blocking the street with the leaf pile.  Also, remember to keep branches, sticks, and other lawn debris, including stones, used planting pots, toys, broken lawn furniture, fence posts, and other non-leafy material out of the piles.  These materials can be drawn into the leaf equipment and cause serious injury to the workers and require costly repairs to the equipment.

The Village thanks you for your patience, understanding and cooperation this “Leaf Season.”
