Sex Offenders at Homeless Shelter
Release Date: May 11, 2005

Westchester County has notified the Village of Rye Brook about several sex offenders currently living at the Volunteers of America homeless shelter at the Westchester County Airport in White Plains. Megan’s Law requires that certain sex offenders register their location with the County’s public safety authorities, which then notify the neighboring police departments.

Although the shelter is not located in Rye Brook, Village officials and the Rye Brook Police Department are working in close contact with the County in monitoring the shelter and its occupants. Westchester County police are stationed at the airport and monitor these offenders at the shelter. The County has announced it will close this facility by the end of 2005. The Rye Brook Police Department personnel are familiar with the locations of known sex offenders near Rye Brook and maintain an active listing of those individuals registered locally.

We will continue to work with the County in monitoring this situation to ensure the safety of the impacted communities. The Village is also supportive of Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano’s proposed amendments to Megan’s law that would require all Level 3 sex offenders, as well as Level 2 offenders who are convicted of sex crimes against children, to wear an electronic monitoring devise for life using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. With GPS, these individuals every move would be tracked in real time.
