Words and Letters in Contemporary Printmaking

January 6 – February 16, 2008

Collectors, artists, and the general public are invited to attend The Rye Art Center’s opening reception of “Text Messages: Words and Letters in Contemporary Printmaking” in the Gallery on January 6, 2008, 4:00 – 6:00 pm.

This exhibit will feature prints by contemporary artists who have elected to work at 1 of 3 unique facilities known as artist workspaces: Dieu Donné, New York, NY; Women’s Studio Workshop, Rosendale, NY; Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Norwalk, CT.

Both seasoned and emerging artists choose to work at these not-for-profit artist workspaces because of the unique blend of technical support and peer encouragement they receive there. Exploring new techniques, materials, and subject matter, the artists have produced edgy and exciting prints which are highly collectible.

Each print in this exhibition contains text of some kind—words or letters, logos, characters, even lengthy messages. Some communicate a particular idea, while others celebrate the graphic beauty and symbolism of the lettering itself. You could say that these prints are “text messages” from the art world.

Immediately following the opening reception, a panel discussion will take place from 5:00 – 6:00 pm in the Performing Arts Room. The panel will be moderated by Anne Coffin, the founder and director of International Print Center NY (IPCNY), located in Manhattan’s vibrant Chelsea gallery district. Stay to hear artists, master printers and print professionals discuss printmaking techniques, the art of collecting contemporary prints, and the special relationship between artist and artist workspace.

A printmaking workshop for children and teens will be led by RAC faculty member Mardie Luppold (MFA/Printmaking) from 4 – 6 pm in the RAC’s Painting Studio. All events are located on the 1st floor of the building, and are free and open to the public.

The exhibition, curated by Margot Clark-Junkins, will remain on view through February 16, 2008. The Rye Arts Center is located at 51 Milton Road, Rye, New York, 10580. For further information, go to www.ryeartscenter.org or contact the Arts Programs Coordinator at (914) 967-0700, ext. 33.

Funding for this exhibition has been made possible in part by New York State Council for the Arts, Westchester Arts Council, Travelers Insurance, Allan M. Block Agency Inc. and Sandhya and Dhruv Narain.
